He Spy Who Loved Me is the tenth novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series first published by Jonathan Cape on 16 April 1962. It is the shortest and most sexually explicit of Fleming's novels as well as a clear departure from previous Bond novels in that the story is told in the first person by the young woman Vivienne Michel.

The central character and narrator of The Spy Who Loved Me is Vivienne "Viv" Michel, a young Canadian woman who ends up running a cheap motel in the Adirondack Mountains to pay for a trip through America. The novel is broken up into three parts: 'Me', 'Them', and 'Him'.

The first section of the book deals with Viv's past love affairs, the first being Derek Mallaby who took her virginity in a field after being kicked out of a cinema for indecent exposure. Their physical relationship ended that night and Viv was subsequently dumped later when Mallaby sent her a letter from the University of Oxford saying he was forcibly engaged to someone else by his parents. Viv details her second love affair with her German boss, Kurt Rainer, who would eventually get Viv pregnant. After she learned of her pregnancy and informed Rainer, he dumped her and paid for her to go to Switzerland to have an abortion.

The second section of the book details Viv's return to her native Canada, her plans to journey through America, and how she came to work at "The Dreamy Pines Motor Court" in the Adirondack Mountains for managers Jed and Mildred Phancey. At the end of the vacation season, the Phanceys entrust Viv to look after the motel for the night before the owner, Mr. Sanguinetti, can arrive to take inventory and shutter it up for the winter. However, two mobsters, "Sluggsy" Morant and Sol "Horror" Horowitz, show up under the guise of working for Mr. Sanguinetti and say they are there to look over the motel for insurance purposes. In truth, the two have been hired by Mr. Sanguinetti to burn down The Dreamy Pines Motor Court so that Mr. Sanguinetti can make a profit on the insurance. The blame for the fire would fall on Viv, who was to perish in the fire. The mobsters, specifically "Sluggsy", are very cruel to Viv, beating her when she attempts to escape and threatening to rape her if she doesn't cooperate.

James Bond - Thunderball

Thunderball is the ninth novel by Ian Fleming based on the fictional British Secret Service agent Commander James Bond. Fleming wrote it intending to film it; it is officially credited as 'based on a screen treatment by Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham, and Ian Fleming', a controversial shared credit that was the result of a courtroom decision. The novel was first published on March 27, 1961, and is technically the first novelisation of a James Bond screenplay, though when written and published, the eponymous film had yet to be produced — and when it was, the screenplay was rewritten by others.

Thunderball begins with a meeting between M and Bond, during which he tells agent 007 that his latest physical assessment is poor, because of excessive drinking and smoking (sixty cigarettes daily). M sends Bond on a two week vacation to the Shrublands health clinic in the country to reduce the bad habits and improve his health. At the clinic, Bond encounters Count Lippe, a member of the Red Lightning Tong criminal organisation from Macau. When Bond learns this, Lippe tries to kill him by tampering with a spinal traction machine, in the effort that Bond will not connect him to SPECTRE. Bond, however, is saved by nurse Patricia Fearing, and he later retaliates against Lippe by trapping him in a steam bath, resulting in second-degree burns and a week's stay in hospital.

Upon returning to London, Bond is a new man, following a new diet and smoking less. The new Bond is ready for action when the SIS receives a communiqué from SPECTRE (SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion) telling them of having hijacked a Villiers Vindicator (V bomber) and so possess its two nuclear bombs, and will destroy two major cities unless a £100,000,000 ransom is paid to them.

For Your Eyes Only is a collection of James Bond short stories by Ian Fleming. It was first published by Jonathan Cape on April 11, 1960. It marked a change of pace for Ian Fleming, who previously had written only full-length novels featuring James Bond.

"For Your Eyes Only" begins with the murder of a Jamaican couple who had refused to sell their estate to Herr von Hammerstein, a former Gestapo officer who is the chief of counterintelligence for the Cuban secret service. When they refuse they are killed by two Cuban hitmen at the direction of Major Gonzales, all three of whom work for von Hammerstein. The Havelocks turn out to be close friends of M, who served as the groom's best man during their wedding in 1925. M subsequently gives Bond a voluntary assignment, "off-book" from sanctioned Secret Service duties, to sneak into Vermont via Canada, track down von Hammerstein at his rented estate at Echo Lake, and prevent further harm to the Havelocks' only daughter by any means necessary. When Bond arrives on the scene, however, he finds the Havelocks' daughter, Judy, intends to carry out her own mission of revenge. Judy kills von Hammerstein from 100 yards by shooting him in the back with a bow and arrow at the exact moment he dives into a lake. A shootout then occurs between Bond and Major Gonzales and the two Cuban gunmen. Bond kills all of them.

Many of the details of this story are used in the film For Your Eyes Only, including the fact that a couple named Havelock are murdered by a hitman named Gonzalez. In the film, though, the daughter's name is Melina and the murder takes place in Greece. Melina Havelock does take her revenge in the film very much as Judy Havelock does in the story, but the subject of Melina's crossbow assassination is Gonzalez and he is killed while diving into his swimming pool.

James Bond - Goldfinger

Goldfinger is the seventh novel and basis for the third Bond film (1964) in Ian Fleming's James Bond series and franchise. It was first published by the British publishers Jonathan Cape on March 23, 1959.

After Bond returns to London, he inquires into the background of Goldfinger, to find that he is the richest man in England, the world's top gold smuggler, and treasurer for the Soviet assassination agency SMERSH.

Bond is sent to collect information from Goldfinger, and Bond manages to join him for what turns into a high-stakes game of golf. Goldfinger cheats by switching golf balls, but Bond beats him at his own game and wins. Bond is then sent on a mission to find Goldfinger's supply of gold that he has been smuggling, and bring it back to England. Bond manages to trace Goldfinger to a warehouse in Geneva where the white-gold armor of Goldfinger's Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost is regularly being melted into aircraft seat-frames, to be smuggled into India. Bond is then captured and tortured for information (being promised a slow death by buzz saw rather than a quick one, if he doesn't talk). This continues until Bond blacks out without revealing himself as an operative, and apparently establishes his bona fides with Goldfinger, for he not only isn't killed but is given a job. This occurs when he next wakes up — far off in New York where he is being taken to Goldfinger's warehouse — there he is told he and Tilly Masterton will be working for Goldfinger, essentially as secretaries and personnel managers — for Bond had earlier offered his services, pretending to be a huckster, but had seemingly been refused and had expected to die.

James Bond - Dr. No

Dr. No (also Dr No and Doctor No) is Ian Fleming's sixth James Bond novel, originally published on the 31 March 1958. This novel was inspired by Fleming's having read Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu stories at Eton College.

In Dr. No, M learns from the firm's neurologist that the poison was tetrodotoxin, which is obtained from the sex organs of the Japanese fish fugu. Tetrodotoxin paralyses the muscles of the victim while they stay fully conscious until eventually they die from asphyxiation. Bond is given first aid treatment by his friend Rene Mathis, while a doctor is urgently summoned (Klebb, we learn, is captured and has died). The Doctor had spent time in South America and had dealt with various poisons. He diagnoses curare poisoning and treats Bond accordingly. But his chances of survival are extremely slim.

Nonetheless, Bond survives. When he returns to duty, he is sent by M on a rest cure to Jamaica, a simple assignment to investigate the disappearance of Strangways, the head of Station J in Kingston, who had previously appeared in Live and Let Die. He learns that Strangways had been investigating the activities of Doctor Julius No, a reclusive Chinese-German who lives on an island called Crab Key that is said to be the home of a vicious dragon. Bond soon realizes that he is being watched. His hotel room is searched, a basket of poisoned fruit is delivered to his hotel room (supposedly a gift from the colonial governor), and then a deadly centipede is placed in his bed while he is sleeping.

With help of old friend Quarrel (who also previously appeared in Live and Let Die), as well as the beautiful Honeychile Rider, who visits the island to collect valuable shells (who, apart from her belt and diving knife is completely naked when Bond first sees her), Bond discovers that Doctor No, who operates a business harvesting and exporting guano, is also working with the Russians and has built an elaborate underground facility from which he can sabotage American missile tests. Dr. No was previously a member of a Chinese "tong" (criminal gang) and he was tortured and then had his hands cut off by order of the "tong" leaders after he stole a large amount of money from the "tong" treasury. The "tong" hit men then shot him in the chest, but No survived due to having dextrocardia (heart on the right side of the chest). No survived all this without revealing the location of the money he had stolen, and was left with artificial hands — and great wealth.

James Bond - From Russia, with Love

From Russia, with Love, published in 1957, is the fifth James Bond novel written by Ian Fleming and is considered one of the best in the series.

From Russia with Love differs from Fleming's previous Bond novels in that the first third of the novel revolves around SMERSH executioner Red Grant, as well as the organization, SMERSH itself. (Bond himself is not mentioned by name until the end of Chapter 5, and does not actually make an appearance until Part 2 of the novel commences with Chapter 11.)

The novel is a series of elaborate plots and counterplots between the British and the Russian intelligence agencies. It begins with SMERSH, the Soviet counterintelligence agency, seeking to redeem itself from a series of failures that have made some within the Soviet government begin to criticize the organization. SMERSH plans to commit a grand act of terrorism in the intelligence field. For this, SMERSH has targeted British secret service agent, Commander James Bond. Due in part to his role in the defeat of Le Chiffre, Mr. Big, and Hugo Drax, Bond has been listed as an enemy of the Soviet state and a "death warrant" has been issued for him.

James Bond - Diamonds Are Forever

Diamonds Are Forever is the fourth novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. It was first published by Jonathan Cape on March 26, 1956.

The novel takes place just over two months from the end of Moonraker, which ended with James Bond taking a short holiday in France to recover from injuries received on that assignment. When Diamonds Are Forever begins, M, acting on information received from Special Branch, tasks Bond to infiltrate a smuggling ring, which is running diamonds from African mines to the United States. Bond's job is to travel down the "pipeline" as far as he can and find out who is behind it all.

Using the identity of Peter Franks, a country house burglar who decided to become a diamond smuggler, he meets a mysterious "go-between" named Tiffany Case, with whom he eventually falls in love. Bond discovers that the smuggling ring is operated by a ruthless American gang called "The Spangled Mob", which is run by the brothers Jack and Seraffimo Spang.

As Bond learns, the pipeline begins in Africa where a dentist would pay miners to smuggle diamonds in their mouths which the dentist would extract during a routine appointment. From there the dentist would take the diamonds and rendezvous with a German helicopter pilot. Eventually the diamonds would go to Paris, and from there to London. In London, Tiffany would get an assignment from a phone contact only known as ABC, she would then meet with "the hire" (in this case, Bond masquerading as Peter Franks) and explain to that person how to smuggle the diamonds to New York City. After an attempt to pay Bond surreptitiously through a rigged horse race in nearby Saratoga fails, the pipeline leads to Las Vegas where Bond finally receives his payment through a rigged blackjack game. Seraffimo Spang owns the Tiara hotel, headquarters of the Spangled Mob, and an old Western ghost town, named "Spectreville", that he has restored into his own private vacation retreat. (Spectreville actually has no connection whatsoever to Bond's nemesis SPECTRE, which appears later in Thunderball and is established at the start of the James Bond film series in Dr. No).

James Bond - Moonraker

Moonraker is the third novel by British author Ian Fleming featuring the fictional British Secret Service agent Commander James Bond, first published by Jonathan Cape on April 7, 1955. Set completely in England, it follows Bond's mission to stop an industrialist, Hugo Drax, from destroying London with a nuclear weapon.

M asks James Bond to investigate the multi-millionaire businessman Sir Hugo Drax, who is winning a lot of money playing bridge at M's favorite club, Blades. M suspects Drax of cheating, but although claiming indifference, he is concerned why a multi-millionaire and national hero, such as Sir Hugo, would cheat at a card game. Bond confirms Drax's deception and manages to "cheat the cheater" — aided by a cocktail of powdered Benzedrine mixed with non-vintage champagne and a deck of stacked cards — winning £15,000 and infuriating the out-smarted Drax.

Drax is the product of a mysterious background, unknown even to himself (presumably). As a supposed British soldier in WWII, he was badly injured, and stricken with amnesia, in the explosion of a bomb planted by a German saboteur at his field headquarters. After extensive rehabilitation in an army hospital, however, he would eventually return home to become a major aerospace industrialist.

Now, Drax and his firm are building the "Moonraker", Britain's first nuclear missile project, intended to defend the United Kingdom against its Cold War enemies (c.f. the real Blue Streak missile). Essentially, the Moonraker rocket is an upgraded V-2 rocket using liquid hydrogen and fluorine as propellants. It can withstand the ultra-high combustion temperatures in its engine thanks to the use of columbite, of which Drax has a monopoly. Therefore, because the rocket's engine can withstand higher heat, the Moonraker can use more powerful fuels, greatly expanding its effective range.

James Bond - Live and Let Die

Live and Let Die is the second novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. First published by Jonathan Cape on April 5, 1954, it is considered one of Fleming's most controversial novels due to its depiction of Afro-Caribbean people and voodoo.

In New York, Bond meets up with his counterpart in the CIA, Felix Leiter. The two decide to visit some of Mr. Big's nightclubs in Harlem, but Mr. Big is aware of their movements through his network of informers and they are easily captured. Bond is personally interrogated by Mr. Big, who uses his fortune telling-girlfriend, Solitaire, to determine if Bond is telling the truth. Solitaire lies to Mr. Big, supporting Bond's cover story. Mr. Big decides to release Bond and Felix with only a mild beating, and has one of his men break one of Bond's fingers by pulling it backward until it snaps, but Bond then escapes and kills several of Mr. Big's men in the process. Leiter is released by a sympathetic gang member who shares his love of jazz.

Solitaire later contacts Bond and they travel to St. Petersburg, Florida. While Bond and Leiter are scouting one of Mr. Big's warehouses that is used for storing exotic fish, Solitaire is kidnapped by Mr. Big's minions. Felix later returns to the warehouse by himself, but is either captured and fed to a shark or tricked into standing on a trap door over the shark tank. He survives, losing an arm and a leg. Bond finds him in their safe house with a note pinned to his chest "He disagreed with something that ate him". After getting Felix to the hospital, Bond investigates the warehouse himself, and discovers that Mr. Big is indeed smuggling gold by placing it in the bottom of fish tanks holding poisonous tropical fish. Bond destroys much of the warehouse and then causes Mr. Big's gunman to fall into the shark tank without leaving evidence that he has discovered the coin-smuggling scheme.

Bond continues his mission in Jamaica where he meets Quarrel and John Strangways, the head of the MI6 station in Jamaica. Quarrel gives Bond training in Scuba diving in the local waters. Bond swims through shark and barracuda infested waters to Mr. Big's island and manages to plant a limpet mine on the hull of his yacht before being captured once again by Mr. Big. In the grand finale, Mr. Big ties Solitaire and Bond to a line behind his yacht and plans to drag them over the shallow coral reef and into deeper water so that the sharks and barracuda that he attracts in to the area with regular feedings will eat them.

Bond and Solitaire are saved when the limpet mine explodes moments before they are dragged over the reef. Bond and Solitaire are protected from the explosion by the reef, and Bond watches as Mr. Big, who survived the explosion, is killed by the sharks and barracuda. Bond and Solitaire then stay in Jamaica for a brief holiday in the book's close.

Casino Royale by Ian Fleming is the first James Bond novel. It would eventually pave the way for thirteen other novels by Fleming himself, in addition to two short story collections, followed by many 'continuation' Bond novels by other authors.

Monsieur Le Chiffre ("the cypher"), the treasurer of a Soviet-backed trade union in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France, is running a baccarat game in the casino at Royale-les-Eaux, France, in order to recover union money he lost in a failed chain of brothels.

Expert baccarat player James Bond (British secret agent 007) is assigned the defeat of Le Chiffre, in the hope that his gambling debts will provoke Soviet espionage agency SMERSH to kill him. Bond is provided an assistant, the beautiful, emotionally unstable Vesper Lynd, who becomes his lover. After hours of intense play Bond beats Le Chiffre. Soon after, Le Chiffre abducts Vesper and uses her to lure Bond into a near-fatal car chase, which results in Bond's capture. Le Chiffre tortures Bond. However, when it becomes clear to Le Chiffre that Bond will not tell him where the money is, he threatens to castrate him. Seconds later a SMERSH agent assassinates Le Chiffre for his betrayal, shooting him through the head with a pistol. Unintentionally, the SMERSH assassin (whose organisation becomes the hero's bitter nemesis in later adventures) spares the captive Bond, saying: "I have no orders to kill you" — yet cuts the Cyrillic letter "Ш" (шпион, shpion, spy) in the back of Bond's left hand, "for future reference".

Bond spends three weeks in hospital recovering from his torture at the hands of Le Chiffre, expressing intent to resign from the secret service, and spends his convalescence with Vesper Lynd. After his recuperation he becomes suspicious of her because of the combination of apparent dishonesty and her terror of a man with an eye patch called Gettler. Believing that Gettler is a SMERSH assassin sent to kill her and Bond for her disobedience, Vesper commits suicide by an overdose of sleeping pills, leaving Bond an explanatory note where it is revealed that she is a Soviet double agent who was ordered to ensure Bond did not escape Le Chiffre. Her betrayal inspires him to remain in service; he tersely reports to HQ: "The bitch is dead now."

There were three of them Jerry, Jimmy, and Kathleen. Of course, Jerry's name was Gerald, and not Jeremiah, whatever you may think; and Jimmy's name was James; and Kathleen was never called by her name at all, but Cathy, or Catty, or Puss Cat, when her brothers were pleased with her, and Scratch Cat when they were not pleased. And they were at school in a little town in the West of England the boys at one school, of course, and the girl at another, because the sensible habit of having boys and girls at the same school is not yet as common as I hope it will be some day. They used to see each other on Saturdays and Sundays at the house of a kind maiden lady; but it was one of those houses where it is impossible to play. You know the kind of house, don't you? There is a sort of a something about that kind of house that makes you hardly able even to talk to each other when you are left alone, and playing seems unnatural and affected. So they looked forward to the holidays, when they should all go home and be together all day long, in a house where playing was natural and conversation possible, and where the Hampshire forests and fields were full of interesting things to do and see. Their Cousin Betty was to be there too, and there were plans. Betty's school broke up before theirs, and so she got to the Hampshire home first, and the moment she got there she began to have measles, so that my three couldn't go home at all. You may imagine their feelings. The thought of seven weeks at Miss Hervey's was not to be borne, and all three wrote home and said so. This astonished their parents very much, because they had always thought it was so nice for the children to have dear Miss Hervey's to go to. However, they were "jolly decent about it , as Jerry said, and after a lot of letters and telegrams, it was arranged that the boys should go and stay at Kathleen's school, where there were now no girls left and no mistresses except the French one.

Even in college Alfred Hardy was a young man of fixed ideas and high ideals and proud of it.

His friend, Jimmy Jinks, had few ideas and no ideals, and was glad of it, and before half of their first college term had passed, Jimmy had ridded himself of all such worries as making up his own mind or directing his own morals. Alfred did all these things so much better, argued Jimmy, furthermore, Alfred LIKED to do them--Jimmy owed it to his friend to give him that pleasure.

The fact that Jimmy was several years Alfred's senior and twice his size, in no way altered his opinion of Alfred's judgment, and through their entire college course they agreed as one man in all their discussions--or rather--in all Alfred's discussions.

But it was not until the close of their senior year that Alfred favoured Jimmy with his views on matrimony.

The order of the Knights of St. John, which for some centuries played a very important part in the great struggle between Christianity and Mahomedanism, was, at its origin, a semi-religious body, its members being, like other monks, bound by vows of obedience, chastity, and poverty, and pledged to minister to the wants of the pilgrims who flocked to the Holy Places, to receive them at their great Hospital -- or guest house -- at Jerusalem, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, and to defend them on their passage to and from the sea, against attack by Moslems. In a comparatively short time the constitution of the order was changed, and the Knights Hospitallers became, like the Templars, a great military Order pledged to defend the Holy Sepulchre, and to war everywhere against the Moslems. The Hospitallers bore a leading share in the struggle which terminated in the triumph of the Moslems, and the capture by them of Jerusalem. The Knights of St. John then established themselves at Acre, but after a valiant defence of that fortress, removed to Crete, and shortly afterwards to Rhodes. There they fortified the town, and withstood two terrible sieges by the Turks. At the end of the second they obtained honourable terms from Sultan Solyman, and retiring to Malta established themselves there in an even stronger fortress than that of Rhodes, and repulsed all the efforts of the Turks to dispossess them. The Order was the great bulwark of Christendom against the invasion of the Turks, and the tale of their long struggle is one of absorbing interest, and of the many eventful episodes none is more full of incident and excitement than the first siege of Rhodes, which I have chosen for the subject of my story.

Mr. Bird said that he had assisted in naming the three boys, and that he should leave this matter entirely to Mrs. Bird; Donald wanted the child called "Maud," after a pretty little curly-haired girl who sat next him in school; Paul chose "Luella," for Luella was the nurse who had been with him during his whole babyhood, up to the time of his first trousers, and the name suggested all sorts of comfortable things. Uncle Jack said that the first girl should always be named for her mother, no matter how hideous the name happened to be.

Grandma said that she would prefer not to take any part in the discussion, and everybody suddenly remembered that Mrs. Bird had thought of naming the baby Lucy, for Grandma herself; and, while it would be indelicate for her to favor that name, it would be against human nature for her to suggest any other, under the circumstances.

Hugh, the "hitherto baby," if that is a possible term, sat in one corner and said nothing, but felt, in some mysterious way, that his nose was out of joint; for there was a newer baby now, a possibility he had never taken into consideration; and the "first girl," too, a still higher development of treason, which made him actually green with jealousy.

But it was too profound a subject to be settled then and there, on the spot; besides, Mama had not been asked, and everybody felt it rather absurd, after all, to forestall a decree that was certain to be absolutely wise, just and perfect.

The reason that the subject had been brought up at all so early in the day lay in the fact that Mrs. Bird never allowed her babies to go over night unnamed. She was a person of so great decision of character that she would have blushed at such a thing; she said that to let blessed babies go dangling and dawdling about without names, for months and months, was enough to ruin them for life. She also said that if one could not make up one's mind in twenty-four hours it was a sign that--but I will not repeat the rest, as it might prejudice you against the most charming woman in the world.

So Donald took his new velocipede and went out to ride up and down the stone pavement and notch the shins of innocent people as they passed by, while Paul spun his musical top on the front steps.

But Hugh refused to leave the scene of action. He seated himself on the top stair in the hall, banged his head against the railing a few times, just by way of uncorking the vials of his wrath, and then subsided into gloomy silence, waiting to declare war if more "first girl babies" were thrust upon a family already surfeited with that unnecessary article.

Meanwhile dear Mrs. Bird lay in her room, weak, but safe and happy with her sweet girl baby by her side and the heaven of motherhood opening before her. Nurse was making gruel in the kitchen, and the room was dim and quiet. There was a cheerful open fire in the grate, but though the shutters were closed, the side windows that looked out on the Church of our Saviour, next door, were wide open.

Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens is a children story written by J. M. Barrie. The first story is If you ask your mother whether she knew about Peter Pan when she was a little girl she will say, "Why, of course, I did, child," and if you ask her whether he rode on a goat in those days she will say, "What a foolish question to ask, certainly he did." Then if you ask your grandmother whether she knew about Peter Pan when she was a girl, she also says, "Why, of course, I did, child," but if you ask her whether he rode on a goat in those days, she says she never heard of his having a goat. Perhaps she has forgotten, just as she sometimes forgets your name and calls you Mildred, which is your mother's name. Still, she could hardly forget such an important thing as the goat. Therefore there was no goat when your grandmother was a little girl. This shows that, in telling the story of Peter Pan, to begin with the goat (as most people do) is as silly as to put on your jacket before your vest.

Of course, it also shows that Peter is ever so old, but he is really always the same age, so that does not matter in the least. His age is one week, and though he was born so long ago he has never had a birthday, nor is there the slightest chance of his ever having one. The reason is that he escaped from being a human when he was seven days' old; he escaped by the window and flew back to the Kensington Gardens.

If you think he was the only baby who ever wanted to escape, it shows how completely you have forgotten your own young days. When David heard this story first he was quite certain that he had never tried to escape, but I told him to think back hard, pressing his hands to his temples, and when he had done this hard, and even harder, he distinctly remembered a youthful desire to return to the tree-tops, and with that memory came others, as that he had lain in bed planning to escape as soon as his mother was asleep, and how she had once caught him half-way up the chimney. All children could have such recollections if they would press their hands hard to their temples, for, having been birds before they were human, they are naturally a little wild during the first few weeks, and very itchy at the shoulders, where their wings used to be. So David tells me.

This was all that passed between them on the subject, but henceforth Wendy knew that she must grow up. You always know after you are two. Two is the beginning of the end. Of course they lived at 14, and until Wendy came her mother was the chief one. She was a lovely lady, with a romantic mind and such a sweet mocking mouth. Her romantic mind was like the tiny boxes, one within the other, that come from the puzzling East, however many you discover there is always one more; and her sweet mocking mouth had one kiss on it that Wendy could never get, though there it was, perfectly conspicuous in the right-hand corner.

The way Mr. Darling won her was this: the many gentlemen who had been boys when she was a girl discovered simultaneously that they loved her, and they all ran to her house to propose to her except Mr. Darling, who took a cab and nipped in first, and so he got her. He got all of her, except the innermost box and the kiss. He never knew about the box, and in time he gave up trying for the kiss. Wendy thought Napoleon could have got it, but I can picture him trying, and then going off in a passion, slamming the door.

Mr. Darling used to boast to Wendy that her mother not only loved him but respected him. He was one of those deep ones who know about stocks and shares. Of course no one really knows, but he quite seemed to know, and he often said stocks were up and shares were down in a way that would have made any woman respect him.

Mrs. Darling was married in white, and at first she kept the books perfectly, almost gleefully, as if it were a game, not so much as a Brussels sprout was missing; but by and by whole cauliflowers dropped out, and instead of them there were pictures of babies without faces. She drew them when she should have been totting up. They were Mrs. Darling's guesses.
Wendy came first, then John, then Michael.

For a week or two after Wendy came it was doubtful whether they would be able to keep her, as she was another mouth to feed. Mr. Darling was frightfully proud of her, but he was very honourable, and he sat on the edge of Mrs. Darling's bed, holding her hand and calculating expenses, while she looked at him imploringly. She wanted to risk it, come what might, but that was not his way; his way was with a pencil and a piece of paper, and if she confused him with suggestions he had to begin at the beginning again.
"Now don't interrupt," he would beg of her. "I have one pound seventeen here, and two and six at the office; I can cut off my coffee at the office, say ten shillings, making two nine and six, with your eighteen and three makes three nine seven, with five naught naught in my cheque-book makes eight nine seven -- who is that moving? -- eight nine seven, dot and carry seven -- don't speak, my own -- and the pound you lent to that man who came to the door -- quiet, child -- dot and carry child -- there, you've done it! -- did I say nine nine seven? yes, I said nine nine seven; the question is, can we try it for a year on nine nine seven?"

There was nothing so Very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so Very much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself, 'Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!' (when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural); but when the Rabbit actually Took A Watch Out Of Its Waistcoat- Pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge.

In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.

The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well.

Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next. First, she tried to look down and make out what she was coming to, but it was too dark to see anything; then she looked at the sides of the well, and noticed that they were filled with cupboards and book-shelves; here and there she saw maps and pictures hung upon pegs. She took down a jar from one of the shelves as she passed; it was labelled 'Orange Marmalade', but to her great disappointment it was empty: she did not like to drop the jar for fear of killing somebody, so managed to put it into one of the cupboards as she fell past it.

The Arabian Nights Entertainments is The stories in the Fairy Books have generally been such as old women in country places tell to their grandchildren. Nobody knows how old they are, or who told them first. The children of Ham, Shem and Japhet may have listened to them in the Ark, on wet days. Hector's little boy may have heard them in Troy Town, for it is certain that Homer knew them, and that some of them were written down in Egypt about the time of Moses.

People in different countries tell them differently, but they are always the same stories, really, whether among little Zulus, at the Cape, or little Eskimo, near the North Pole. The changes are only in matters of manners and customs; such as wearing clothes or not, meeting lions who talk in the warm countries, or talking bears in the cold countries. There are plenty of kings and queens in the fairy tales, just because long ago there were plenty of kings in the country. A gentleman who would be a squire now was a kind of king in Scotland in very old times, and the same in other places. These old stories, never forgotten, were taken down in writing in different ages, but mostly in this century, in all sorts of languages. These ancient stories are the contents of the Fairy books.

Now "The Arabian Nights," some of which, but not nearly all, are given in this volume, are only fairy tales of the East. The people of Asia, Arabia, and Persia told them in their own way, not for children, but for grown-up people. There were no novels then, nor any printed books, of course; but there were people whose profession it was to amuse men and women by telling tales. They dressed the fairy stories up, and made the characters good Mahommedans, living in Bagdad or India. The events were often supposed to happen in the reign of the great Caliph, or ruler of the Faithful, Haroun al Raschid, who lived in Bagdad in 786-808 A.D. The vizir who accompanies the Caliph was also a real person of the great family of the Barmecides. He was put to death by the Caliph in a very cruel way, nobody ever knew why. The stories must have been told in their present shape a good long while after the Caliph died, when nobody knew very exactly what had really happened. At last some storyteller thought of writing down the tales, and fixing them into a kind of framework, as if they had all been narrated to a cruel Sultan by his wife. Probably the tales were written down about the time when Edward I. was fighting Robert Bruce. But changes were made in them at different times, and a great deal that is very dull and stupid was put in, and plenty of verses. Neither the verses nor the dull pieces are given in this book.

People in France and England knew almost nothing about "The Arabian Nights" till the reigns of Queen Anne and George I., when they were translated into French by Monsieur Galland. Grown-up people were then very fond of fairy tales, and they thought these Arab stories the best that they had ever read. They were delighted with Ghouls (who lived among the tombs) and Geni, who seemed to be a kind of ogres, and with Princesses who work magic spells, and with Peris, who are Arab fairies. Sindbad had adventures which perhaps came out of the Odyssey of Homer; in fact, all the East had contributed its wonders, and sent them to Europe in one parcel. Young men once made a noise at Monsieur Galland's windows in the dead of night, and asked him to tell them one of his marvellous tales. Nobody talked of anything but dervishes and vizirs, rocs and peris. The stories were translated from French into all languages, and only Bishop Atterbury complained that the tales were not likely to be true, and had no moral. The bishops was presently banished for being on the side of Prince Charlie's father, and had leisure to repent of being so solemn.

In this book "The Arabian Nights" are translated from the French version of Monsieur Galland, who dropped out the poetry and a great deal of what the Arabian authors thought funny, though it seems wearisome to us. In this book the stories are shortened here and there, and omissions are made of pieces only suitable for Arabs and old gentlemen. The translations are by the writers of the tales in the Fairy Books, and the pictures are by Mr. Ford.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a 2001 book written by English author J. K. Rowling to benefit the charity Comic Relief. Over 80% of the cover price of each book sold goes directly to poor children in various places around the world. According to Comic Relief, sales from this book and its companion Quidditch Through the Ages have raised £15.7 million. In a 2001 interview with publisher Scholastic, Rowling stated that she chose the subject of magical creatures because it was a fun topic for which she had already developed a lot of information in earlier books. Rowling's name does not appear on the cover of the book, the work being credited under the pseudonym "Newt Scamander".

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them contains the history of Magizoology and describes 75 magical species found around the world. Scamander collected most of the information found in the book through observations made over years of travel and across five continents. The fictional author notes that the first edition was commissioned in 1918 by Mr Augustus Worme of Obscurus Books. However, it was not published until 1927. It is now in its fifty-second edition.

The book is a required textbook for first-year Hogwarts students, having been an approved textbook since its first publication. It is not clear why students need it in their first year, as students do not take Care of Magical Creatures until their third year. However, it may be used as an encyclopaedia of Dark creatures studied in Defence Against the Dark Arts classes. In his foreword to the book, Albus Dumbledore notes that it serves as an excellent reference for Wizarding households in addition to its use at Hogwarts.

A highlight of the book is the numerous doodles and comments in it by Harry and Ron (and one by Hermione). Based on some of their comments, they were written around the time of the fourth book. These doodles add some extra information for fans of the series, for example the "Acromantula" entry has a comment confirming Hogwarts is located in Scotland.

Integrated in the design, the cover of the book appears to have been clawed by some sort of animal.

Quidditch Through the Ages is a book by the British author J. K. Rowling, and a fictional book described in her Harry Potter series of novels. The real book purports to be a reproduction of a copy of the fictional book held in the Hogwarts library, the book as the copyright holder of the "Harry Potter" name. Written under the pseudonym Kennilworthy Whisp, it is meant to be a copy of the in-universe book Quidditch Through the Ages. The premise is that the book has been released to the Muggle world to help raise money for needy causes. It features a foreword by Albus Dumbledore, in which he stresses the only way he was able to take it from Irma Pince—Librarian of the Hogwarts Library—was to "prise her fingers individually from the spine."

The first page is meant to look like a library borrowing log, which features the names of many Hogwarts Quidditch players. Along with T. Nott and C. Diggory, the name H. Granger appears near the bottom as she took it out in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone before the first broom riding lesson.

The copyright page features Praise for Quidditch Through the Ages, with commentary by wizarding celebs Bathilda Bagshot, Brutus Scrimgeour, Gilderoy Lockhart, Ludovic Bagman, Rita Skeeter and the Editor of Which Broomstick.

Di rumahnya di Spinner's End, Severus Snape mendapatkan kunjungan dari ibu Draco Malfoy, Narcissa dan kakaknya, Bellatrix Lestrange. Narcissa memaksa Snape melakukan Sumpah Tak-Terlanggar, agar Snape melindungi Draco dan, bila tugas Draco gagal, Snape harus menyelesaikan tugas yang diberikan oleh sang Pangeran Kegelapan.

Pada pesta memulai tahun ajaran baru, Snape diumumkan telah diangkat sebagai guru Pertahanan terhadap Ilmu Hitam yang baru, hal yang sangat mengherankan bagi kebanyakan murid Hogwarts, khususnya karena selama bertahun-tahun ia tidak berhasil mendapatkan posisi itu. Mempergunakan Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore berhasil membujuk kawan guru lamanya, Horace Slughorn, untuk mengakhiri masa pensiunnya, dan kembali mengajar di jabatan lamanya, sebagai guru Ramuan.

Karena Slughorn hanya meminta nilai minimal "E" ("Exceed Expectations"-"Di Luar Dugaan") dalam ujian O.W.L. untuk melanjutkan ke kelas lanjutan ([N.E.W.T.) Ramuan, Harry dan Ron berkesempatan untuk mendaftar di kelas itu. Slughorn meminjamkan Harry buku teks tua "Pembuatan-Ramuan Tingkat Lanjutan" yang bertuliskan nama pemiliknya, "Pangeran Berdarah Campuran". Catatan-catatan kecil dari pemilik buku yang berbakat itu membantu Harry menjadi unggul di kelas Ramuan, dan mendapatkan reputasi melebihi Hermione. Sebagai hadiah, Slughorn memberikannya hadiah sebotol kecil Felix Felicis, cairan keberuntungan.

Harry menceritakan kecurigaannya, bahwa Draco Malfoy mungkin adalah seorang Pelahap Maut, kepada Dumbledore, yang tampaknya tidak kuatir, sama seperti Ron dan Hermione. Belakangan, diketahui bahwa Dumbledore sudah menyuruh Snape untuk menyelidiki.

Pelajaran ini berupa pengetahuan mengenai masa lalu Voldemort dan diberikan dalam bentuk memasuki kopi memori-memori orang-orang yang pernah berkaitan dengan masa lalu Voldemort ini, menggunakan alat sihir semacam baskom, Pensieve. Salah satu memori yang merupakan kopi dari memori Slughorn memiliki bagian yang hilang. Dumbledore menugasi Harry untuk mengusahakan memori itu dari Slughorn. Dibantu dengan cairan Felix Felicis, Harry akhirnya berhasil mendapatkan potongan memori itu dari Slughorn. Dumbeldore berspekulasi bahwa Voldemort telah membagi jiwanya menjadi tujuh bagian, dan menyimpan enam bagian dari jiwanya dalam "Horcrux" untuk memastikan bahwa dirinya hidup abadi, sementara bagian ketujuh tetap ada di tubuhnya. Dua Horcrux telah dihancurkan, yang pertama adalah buku harian Tom Riddle yang dihancurkan oleh Harry dan cincin milik Marvolo Gaunt oleh Dumbledore.Pada masa ini, Harry dan Ginny Weasley memulai hubungan cinta mereka.

Ini karena diselenggarakannya Turnamen Triwizard, turnamen sihir yang melibatkan tiga sekolah sihir paling ternama di dunia, yaitu Hogwarts, Durmstrang, dan Beauxbatons.

Cerita dibuka ketika Harry pergi bersama keluarga Weasley dan Hermione untuk menyaksikan Piala Dunia Quidditch. Masalah mulai muncul saat tanda kegelapan -tanda yang dikeluarkan Lord Voldemort dan para Pelahap Maut setelah membunuh orang-- muncul selama Piala Dunia. Seusai Piala Dunia, masalah kembali muncul ketika Harry terpilih menjadi wakil Hogwarts dalam Turnamen Triwizard. Hal ini sangat aneh karena sebenarnya Turnamen Triwizard hanya boleh diikuti oleh peserta yang telah berusia 17 tahun, sedangkan Harry sendiri waktu itu belum berumur 17 tahun. Seseorang nampaknya ingin mencelakai Harry Potter.

Dalam Turnamen Triwizard, Harry harus bertanding melawan Viktor Krum (Wakil Durmstrang), Fleur Delacour (Wakil Beauxbatons), dan Cedric Diggory (Wakil Hogwarts lainnya. Ia harus menaklukan naga, menyelam ke dasar danau yang dingin, sampai melewati labirin yang penuh dengan labirin sihir untuk memenangkan Turnamen Triwizard. Di akhir cerita, lagi-lagi Harry harus bertarung dengan Lord Voldemort, Wormtail, Nagini, dan para Pelahap Maut. Selain Ron Weasley dan Hermione, tokoh kunci dalam cerita kali ini adalah Mad-Eye Moody, Rubeus Hagrid, Karkaroff, dan Barty Crouch.

Harry Potter hidup sebagai anak biasa di keluarga paman dan bibinya setelah saat ia masih bayi ditinggalkan di depan rumah mereka oleh Albus Dumbledore. Sebelumnya, di stasiun ia bertemu Molly Weasley, ibu mereka, dan Ginny Weasley. Selain itu, terdapat pula Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom, serta Draco Malfoy.

Di Hogwarts, mereka diseleksi ke dalam satu dari empat asrama oleh Topi Seleksi. Harry, Ron, Hermione, dan Neville masuk ke asrama yang mempunyai reputasi terbaik, Gryffindor, sedangkan Malfoy masuk ke Slytherin, tempat berbagai penyihir hitam.

The ocean was as tranquil as a lake with a slight breeze that formed the smallest ripples across the top of the water. The sun was shining so brightly on that warm spring morning. Summer was knocking at the door and the school of fish swam merrily around in circles bumping into one another.

The fishermen had passed them by and it was time for the fun to begin. Once a month the fish would have a contest -- the flying fish contest. The contest consisted of which fish could fly the highest above the water’s crest, which could perform the best tricks while in the air and which had the most graceful landing. There was a point system one though ten, ten being the best.

Johnny, ‘Flying Fins’ as his fans called him, was one of the best. He truly was the colossal king of his dreams. He aroused the crowd as he did his pre-jump swim. He turned upside down and did repetitive back flips and then he would swim by all the female fish and blow them bubbled hearts.

Thomas Lawrence adjusted his sunglasses.
It was unbearably hot. Already sweat was forming under his arms and running down his back. He looked around and saw that he wasn’t the only one with the problem. A lot of men and even some of the women had blotchy sweat stains on their clothing.

He was outside the Damascus International Airport, waiting for his second (or was it third?) cousin, to pick him up.

The late afternoon sun seemed to be shining directly on him.
This whole trip had been his mom’s idea. Her name was Saramma but it had changed to Umm Thomas, the day he was born. It was an Arabic thing. Even his own name reflected his Arabic heritage because he had been named after his paternal grandfather, Thomma.

But this was where his genealogy got complicated. His mother had an Arabic mother and an English father. His father had an Arabic father and an English mother. So, when his parents met at the University of Toronto, they had had a lot in common. They knew what it was like to grow up in a household that spoke both Arabic and English and mixed the two cultures.

But growing up in Canada, he had learned very little about his Arabic heritage. In fact, with his dark hair and dark eyes, he was often mistaken for Italian.
What had brought about the trip was a question he had asked his mom a few months earlier.

Somewhere Between Longview and Miami

I get a letter from him about every six months.
My subconscious prepares me for the event by causing me to have major urges to check the mailbox twice a day, sometimes even three times. I also think a lot about him for the month leading up to the letter. Just the usual stuff -- fantasies about chance encounters with him even though he's about 1500 miles away.

The letter, when it arrives, is savored. I don't tell Wilson about it although he always comments that I seem distant.

I usually smile and say, "It's moon orbs. Right now the moon is aligned with Jupiter and it creates an aura of peace in my life." I have no idea whether it is even possible for the moon to align with Jupiter, but, of course, neither does Wilson. He just looks at me like I'm crazy and asks me if I want to go to the Beer Canteen before or after the movie.

"After," I say. I feel drunk already and a beer would send me into another solar system.

But Wilson has to have his beer so we pull into the parking lot of the Beer Canteen which means we'll miss the seven o'clock show, so we'll have to hang out here till the nine o'clock one, and by that time Wilson will have put away three beers, I will linger over one, and the whole experience will have cost us four dollars. The movie will then set Wilson back another two dollars. Welcome to East Texas. The land of dollar beer and dollar theatres.

Two old ladies sat in the corner of the drawing-room. The younger--a colonial cousin of the elder--was listening eagerly to gossip which dealt with English society in general, and Rickwell society in particular. They presumably assisted in the entertainment of the children already gathered tumultuously round the Christmas tree, provided by Mr. Morley; but Mrs. Parry's budget of scandal was too interesting to permit the relaxing of Mrs. McKail's attention.

"Ah yes," said Mrs. Parry, a hatchet-faced dame with a venomous tongue and a retentive memory, "Morley's fond of children, although he has none of his own."

"But those three pretty little girls?" said Mrs. McKail, who was fat, fair, and considerably over forty.

"Triplets," replied the other, sinking her voice. "The only case of triplets I have met with, but not his children. No, Mrs. Morley was a widow with triplets and money. Morley married her for the last, and had to take the first as part of the bargain. I don't deny but what he does his duty by the three."

Mrs. McKail's keen grey eyes wander to the fat, rosy little man who laughingly struggled amidst a bevy of children, the triplets included. "He seems fond of them," said she, nodding.

"Seems!" emphasised Mrs. Parry shrewdly. "Ha! I don't trust the man. If he were all he seems, would his wife's face wear that expression? No, don't tell me."

Mrs. Morley was a tall, lean, serious woman, dressed in sober grey. She certainly looked careworn, and appeared to participate in the festivities more as a duty than for the sake of amusement. "He is said to be a good husband," observed Mrs. McKail doubtfully. "Are you sure?"

Dreaming in Arabic

I grew up in the Worldwide Church of God, an organization labeled “cult” by most of mainstream Christianity. At the head of it, was Herbert W. Armstrong, a forceful personality, with a unique interpretation of scripture. I grew up believing that we in the Worldwide Church of God were the only true Christians in the world. My mother told me a story of how when I was a toddler in the stroller and we were passing by a large old church, I pointed and said “Man's way.”

The Worldwide Church of God took a lot of their beliefs from the Old Testament. Being young, I never really understand why some of the ancient laws were kept and some were discarded. I'm sure there was a reason and I'm sure it made sense to the adults. At least, I hope it did. I've never felt bad for being part of a group that taught Biblically unsound doctrines. I was a child and a child will believe in Santa Claus if you tell them with enough conviction. But I do wonder about the adults and why they were so quick to let someone interpret the Bible for them. My husband, who is eight years older than me, said that it wasn't so much the doctrine that attracted him as much as the emphasis on righteous living. And there was an emphasis on righteous living. But unfortunately most people were not living up to the high standards we taught.

I think another draw for a lot of people was the emphasis on prophecy. I grew up believing that someday, before a great tribulation fell upon the world, we believers would be taken to a place of safety where we would be hidden from the wrath that fell on everyone else. Herbert W. Armstrong had a radio show and a television show called The World Tomorrow where he preached out of Daniel and Revelation and gave his own unique interpretations. I think there were quite a few people who joined the church to escape the great tribulation.

Though his eyes never wavered from page to page and his mind never strayed from absorbing every detail, periodically and robotically his right forearm would pivot, his fingers would magically find and curl around the handle, the mug would move to his lips, linger, then swing back and gently settle on the same spot. The country roads were covered with hard-packed snow. Being a cautious driver, I could not force the car above 40 miles per hour. The wheels would start to feel as if they were losing traction, and I would let the car coast until its speed dropped. Even so, the dog was making me nervous, so I would gently increase speed, only to drop back again right away. My follower seemed to enjoy this game. Perhaps he thought I was doing it for his entertainment, rather than simply out of fear.

The Smiling, Proud Wanderer

The Sunflower Manual (葵花寶典) was said to be written by a eunuch from the imperial palace and was first discovered by two fellow disciple brothers from the Huashan Sect (華山派) named Yue Su (岳肅) and Cai Zifeng (蔡子峰) during a visit to Shaolin Monastery. In an attempt to copy the manual, each of them read half of it and memorized his part before returning to Huashan. When they tried to compile their parts, they found it to be incomprehensible. Each of them believed his memory and interpretation of the manual was better, but neither could come up with something substantial. Subsequently, Yue Su and Cai Zifeng became rivals and gave rise to the split of the Huashan Sect into the Qi (氣宗) and Sword factions (劍宗), respectively headed by them.

The head abbot of Shaolin Monastery recognised the evil nature and inherent dangers of practising the Sunflower Manual’s martial arts. He sent a monk named Du Yuan (渡元) to act as a mediator between the two factions and dissuade them from practising the Sunflower Manual’s martial arts. The two rivals apologised for their folly and requested Du Yuan’s help in understanding the manual better. Du Yuan was able to make logical conclusions from Yue Su and Cai Zifeng’s recollections of the manual, and eventually compiled a comprehensible version of the Sunflower Manual, which later fell into the hands of the Sun Moon Holy Sect (日月神教) when they raided Huashan.

At the same time, Du Yuan had gradually became extremely obsessed with the manual itself and his mind was totally corrupted by it. He secretly created his own copy of the manual on his cassock and renounced his vows as a monk, returning to a secular life and assuming his former name Lin Yuantu (林遠圖). The manual which he secretly copied became a swordplay manual known as the Bi Xie Swordplay Manual (辟邪劍譜) which bore some similarities to the original Sunflower Manual, such as requiring one to castrate himself before practicing the martial arts within the manual. Although these two martial arts manuals detail powerful martial arts, they are merely small sections of the original Sunflower Manual, so one can expect the true power one can attain upon mastering the full Sunflower Manual.

The main protagonist Linghu Chong (令狐沖), who was the eldest disciple of the Huashan Sect, was then introduced into the storyline as being a scruffy, happy-go-lucky, ruffian-like swordsman. He was involved in some skirmishes with the other sects for befriending the notorious lecherous bandit Tian Boguang (田伯光), but he had saved Yi Lin (儀琳), a young maiden of the (North) Hengshan Sect (恆山派) from being raped by Tian as well. Also, a major event was about to happen in the Wulin then; Liu Zhengfeng (劉正風) of the (South) Hengshan Sect (衡山派) had announced his retirement from the Jianghu and invited all pugilists and the various sects to witness the ceremony. However, the ceremony turned out to be a bloodbath when the Songshan Sect (嵩山派) members turned up, led by their leader Zuo Lengchan (左冷禪). Eventually, Liu Zhengfeng and his friend from the Sun Moon Holy Sect, Qu Yang (曲洋), committed suicide together after playing the famous music piece ‘Xiao Ao Jiang Hu’ (笑傲江湖) which they composed together one last time. Before their deaths, they passed on the music score to Linghu Chong.

Meanwhile, Lin Pingzhi’s entrance into the Huashan Sect caused Linghu Chong to break up with his childhood playmate and first love interest Yue Lingshan (岳靈珊), who was the daughter of Yue Buqun. Yue Lingshan fell in love with the new member Lin Pingzhi, which caused Linghu Chong to fall out of love and become depressed. Linghu Chong’s carefree and reckless nature caused him to get into trouble time and time again, until his teacher Yue Buqun decided to punish him by making him stay in the backhill and reflect on his behavior for a year. Linghu Chong wandered around the backhill and by coincidence, he saw some swordplay techniques carvings in the cave and learnt them, becoming familiar with the swordplay techniques of the Five Mountains Alliance (五岳劍派). Linghu Chong also encountered the reclusive senior swordsman Feng Qingyang (風清揚), who taught him the ‘Nine Swords of Dugu’ (獨孤九劍), and henceforth Linghu Chong became a formidable swordsman.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms (traditional Chinese: 三國演義; simplified Chinese: 三国演义; pinyin: sānguó yǎnyì), written by Luo Guanzhong in the 14th century, is a Chinese historical novel based upon events in the turbulent years near the end of the Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms era of China, starting in 169 and ending with the reunification of the land in 280.

Myths from the Three Kingdoms era existed as oral traditions before any written compilations. With their focus on the history of Han Chinese, the stories grew in popularity during the reign of the foreign Mongol emperors of the Yuan Dynasty. During the succeeding Ming Dynasty, an interest in plays and novels resulted in further expansions and retelling of the stories.

The earliest attempt to combine these stories into a written work was Sanguozhi Pinghua (三國誌評話，三国志评话; Sānguózhì Pínghuà), literally "Story of Sanguozhi", published sometime between 1321 and 1323. This version combined themes of legend, magic, and morality to appeal to the peasant class. Elements of reincarnation and karma were woven into this version of the story.

John Blackthorne, an Englishman of the Dutch warship Erasmus, is shipwrecked on the coast of Japan. He and the few survivors of his Dutch crew are taken captive under the direction of the local samurai Omi-san and confined to a pit for a few days, until, in the eyes of their captors, they begin to act like 'civilized men,' that is, when they stop complaining, demanding their freedom, shouting, etc. Omi-san's daimyo, Yabu-san arrives and executes a randomly-chosen sailor by having him boiled alive. At Omi's suggestion, Yabu plans to keep the guns and money recovered from Blackthorne's ship to increase his own influence, but he is betrayed by a samurai who has informed Yabu's lord, Toranaga, of the ship's arrival; and Yabu is obligated to turn Blackthorne, the ship, and its contents over to him.

While in the household, Blackthorne is given the title Anjin, meaning "pilot," by the Japanese because they can't pronounce his name. Blackthorne insists that Omi-san apply the honorary suffix -san as if he were a samurai worthy of respect, and so Blackthorne is henceforth known as Anjin-san. (In actual history, William Adams was called Anjin-sama, a higher honorific.)

Blackthorne is interviewed by Toranaga, with a Jesuit priest serving as translator. Blackthorne, an Englishman and a Protestant, attempts to turn Toranaga against the Jesuits. In doing so, he reveals to a surprised Toranaga that the Christian faith is divided and that other European countries intend to sail the Asian waters because the Spanish Armada has been defeated. The interview ends when Toranaga's principal rival, Ishido, enters, curious about the 'barbarian' Blackthorne. Toranaga has Blackthorne thrown in prison for piracy to keep him from Ishido. In prison, Blackthorne is befriended by a Franciscan monk, who reveals further details about Jesuit conquests and the "Black Ship" trade. Japan needs Chinese silk, but cannot deal with the Chinese directly. The Portuguese act as an intermediary, shipping the merchandise in their Black Ship at great profit. With the priest's help, Blackthorne begins to learn basic Japanese.

After four days of captivity, Blackthorne is taken out of prison by Ishido's men, but Toranaga intervenes, "capturing" Blackthorne from his rival's men. In their next interview, Toranaga has a different translator, the Lady Mariko, a convert to Christianity who is torn between her new faith and her loyalty to being a samurai and to Toranaga.

An instrumentation system for direct measurement of the thermal conductivity of a small sample of a highly insulating material has been devised. As used here, (1) “small” signifies having dimensions of the order of two centimeters — significantly less than the sizes of specimens for which prior devices for direct measurement of thermal conductivity have been designed; and (2) “highly insulating” signifies having thermal conductivity of the order of that of air.

The heart of the system is an assembly that includes two copper disks — one electrically heated, the other cooled with chilled water. The disks are separated by a guard ring made of strong, thermally insulating polymethacrylamide foam. The sample fits between the copper disks and within the ring (see figure). Matched thermocouples are used to measure the temperatures of the heated and cooled disks. The heated and cooled disks are affixed to larger foam disks, and the essentially still air in the gap between the larger disks insulates the sides of the specimen. This air gap region can be further divided by extending the foam ring into the gap region. The entire assembly as described thus far is lightly clamped together by means of nylon threaded rods and is placed inside a cylindrical chamber wherein the temperature is maintained at a set value (typically, 25 °C).

This Assembly is Mounted in a constant-temperature chamber. The heated and cooled disks are maintained at temperatures ΔT/2 above and ΔT/2 below, respectively, the chamber temperature. The thermal conductivity of the sample is determined from the heater power needed to maintain the ΔT/2 temperature differential of the heated disk. (Note: The dimensions are in inches.)

The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of seven fantasy novels for children written by C. S. Lewis.
The Chronicles of Narnia have been in continuous publication since 1954 and have sold over 100 million copies in 41 languages.Lewis was awarded the 1956 Carnegie Medal for The Last Battle, the final book in the Narnia series. The books were written by Lewis between 1949 and 1954 but were written in neither the order they were originally published nor in the chronological order in which they are currently presented.The original illustrator was Pauline Baynes and her pen and ink drawings are still used in publication today. The seven books that make up The Chronicles of Narnia are presented here in the order in which they were originally published (see reading order below). Completion dates for the novels are English (Northern Hemisphere) seasons.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950)

Main article: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, completed in the winter of 1949 and published in 1950, tells the story of four ordinary children: Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie. They discover a wardrobe in Professor Digory Kirke's house that leads to the magical land of Narnia. The Pevensie children help Aslan save Narnia from the evil White Witch, who has reigned over the kingdom of Narnia for 100 years of perpetual winter.

Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia (1951)

Main article: Prince Caspian

Completed in the autumn of 1949 and published in 1951, Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia tells the story of the Pevensie children's second trip to Narnia. They are drawn back by the power of Susan's horn, blown by Prince Caspian to summon help in his hour of need. Caspian has fled into the woods to escape his uncle, Miraz, who had usurped the throne. The children set out once again to save Narnia; and aided by other Narnians, and ultimately by Aslan, they return the throne to Caspian, the rightful ruler.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)

Main article: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Completed in the winter of 1950 and published in 1952, The Voyage of the ‘Dawn Treader’ returns Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their priggish cousin, Eustace Scrubb, to Narnia. Once there, they join Caspian's voyage to find the seven lords who were banished when Miraz took over the throne. This perilous journey brings them face to face with many wonders and dangers as they sail toward Aslan's country at the end of the world.

The Silver Chair (1953)

Main article: The Silver Chair

Completed in the spring of 1951 and published in 1953, The Silver Chair is the first Narnia book without the Pevensie children. Instead, Aslan calls Eustace back to Narnia together with his classmate Jill Pole. There they are given four signs to find Prince Rilian, Caspian's son, who had been kidnapped ten years earlier. Eustace and Jill, with the help of Puddleglum the Marsh-wiggle, face great danger before finding Rilian, held prisoner in an enchantment by a Green Witch.

The Horse and His Boy (1954)

Main article: The Horse and His Boy

Completed in the spring of 1950 and published in 1954, The Horse and His Boy takes place during the reign of the Pevensies in Narnia, an era which begins and ends in the last chapter of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The story is about Bree, a talking horse, and a young boy named Shasta. Both of whom have been held in bondage in Calormen. By chance, they meet each other and plan their return to Narnia and freedom. On their journey they discover that the Calormenes are about to invade Archenland, and they plan to arrive there first to alert the King.

The Magician's Nephew (1955)

Main article: The Magician's Nephew

Completed in the winter of 1954 and published in 1955, the prequel The Magician's Nephew brings the reader back to the very beginning of Narnia where we learn how Aslan created the world and how evil first entered it. Digory Kirke and his friend Polly Plummer stumble into different worlds by experimenting with magic rings made by Digory's uncle, encounter Jadis (The White Witch), and witness the creation of Narnia. Many long-standing questions about Narnia are answered in the adventure that follows.

The Last Battle (1956)

Main article: The Last Battle

Completed in the spring of 1953 and published in 1956, The Last Battle chronicles the end of the world of Narnia. Jill and Eustace return to save Narnia from Shift, an ape, who tricks Puzzle, a donkey, into impersonating the lion Aslan, precipitating a showdown between the Calormenes and King Tirian.

The Alchemist (Portuguese: O Alquimista) is an allegorical novel by Paulo Coelho first published in 1988.

I found The Alchemist to be a wonderful tale on pursuing one's dreams. Coelho shows how easy it is to give up ever attaining one's dreams due to complacency - or not wanting to move out of one's comfort zone. "People are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel that they don't deserve them, or that they'll be unable to achieve them." Another endearing quote from the book, "There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure." Yet Santiago does want to pursue his dream of finding his treasure and yes, at times we see and feel his fear, but along his journey, he has learned to listen to his heart and to trust what his heart teaches him.

"When a person really desires something all the universe conspires to help that person to realize his dream." Santiago is constantly tested along the way, yet he continues to listen to the murmurings of his heart, which are never wrong. Santiago learns about love along the way and helps others to face their fears as well. Coelho states, "And that's where the power of love comes in. Because when we love, we always strive to become better than we are."

Some may see this fable as contrite, or overworked or too new age for their tastes. I disagree and loved the messages that this book imparted, interwoven in the tale of the desert, The Alchemist, and Santiago. This book, I found, imparted to me numerous jewels of wisdom. I was captured and absorbed into the tale and found myself relating to the fears, but I completely understood the message of following one's dreams, listening to one's heart, trusting, loving and learning to let go of fear. "Listen to your heart. It knows all things, because it came from the Soul of the World, and it will one day return there. Wherever your heart is, that is where you'll find your treasure. Your heart is alive. Keep listening to what it has to say." The Alchemist imparts these words of wisdom to Santiago when Santiago begins to doubt and question.

"Everyone on earth has treasure that awaits him," his heart said. "We, people's hearts, seldom say much about those treasures, because people no longer want to go in search of them. We speak of them only to children. Later we simply let life proceed, in its own direction, toward its own fate. But, unfortunately, very few follow the path laid out for them - the path to their destinies, and to happiness. Most people see the world as a threatening place, and, because they do, the world turns out, indeed, to be a threatening place. So we, their hearts, speak more and more softly. We never stop speaking out . . "

This tale is inspiring, imaginative, and captivating. Santiago grows throughout the story and in the end, even though he was tested severely, he preserved and obtained his treasure by following his dream. We only limit ourselves - only we place limitations on us, as the universe conspires to aid us in all directions.

I highly recommend this book and since this is the second book I have read by Coelho, I now need to read them all! These words speak to my heart!

Alien VS Predator (AVP)

The events of Alien vs. Predator are set in 2004 on Earth. As a Predator spacecraft nears the planet, Earth satellites detect a mysterious heat bloom beneath the ice of the island Bouvetøya near Antarctica. Billionaire Charles Bishop Weyland assembles a team of scientists to investigate the heat source and claim it for his multinational communications company Weyland Industries (foreshadowing the Weyland-Yutani Corporation of the Alien film series). The team includes paleontologists, archaeologists, linguistic experts, drillers, mercenaries and a "rough and tumble" female guide named Alexa Woods.

As the Predator ship reaches Earth orbit, it blasts a hole down through the ice towards the source of the heat bloom. When the human team arrives at the site above the heat source, an abandoned whaling station, they find this hole and descend beneath the ice. There they discover a mysterious pyramid and begin to explore it, finding evidence of a civilization predating written history and what appears to be a "sacrificial chamber" filled with human skeletons with ruptured rib cages. Meanwhile, three Predators land and kill off the humans at the surface, making their way down to the pyramid and arriving just as the team unwittingly powers up the structure. Several of the humans become trapped in the "sacrifical chamber". An Alien queen awakens from cryogenic stasis and begins producing eggs, from which facehuggers hatch and attach themselves to several of the humans. Chestbursters soon emerge from the humans and quickly grow into adult Aliens. Conflicts erupt between the Predators, Aliens and humans, resulting in several deaths. Unbeknownst to the others, one of the Predators is implanted with an Alien embryo by a facehugger.

Through translation of the pyramids hieroglyphs, the explorers learn that the Predators have been visiting Earth for thousands of years. It was they who taught early human civilizations to build pyramids and they were worshiped as gods. At regular intervals, they would visit Earth to take part in a rite of passage in which several humans would sacrifice themselves as hosts for the Aliens, creating the "ultimate prey" for the Predators to hunt. If overwhelmed, the Predators would activate their self-destruct weapons to eliminate the Aliens along with themselves. They deduce that this is why the current Predators are here, to hunt the Aliens again. The survivors further reason that the heat bloom from the pyramid was given off to attract humans for the purposes of making new aliens to hunt. The remaining humans decide the Predators must be allowed to succeed in their hunt so that the Aliens do not spread to the rest of Earth. As the battle continues, most of the characters are killed off (including Weyland), leaving only Alexa Woods and a single Predator to face off against the remaining Aliens. The two ally with each other and use the Predators self-destruct device to destroy the pyramid, killing the remaining Aliens, except for the Alien queen, and escaping to the surface. The Alien queen emerges and the three do battle in the vicinity of the whaling station. Alexa and the Predator defeat the queen by attaching its chain to a heavy water tower and pushing it over a cliff and into the ocean, dragging the queen down to the ocean floor. The Predator, however, dies from its wounds. A Predator ship suddenly decloaks and several Predators appear. They collect their fallen comrade and present Alexa with one of their spear weapons. As they retreat into space, a chestburster erupts from the dead Predator. It appears to be an Alien/Predator hybrid, as it has the characteristic jaw mandibles of both species.

Brilliance of the Moon is the third novel in Lian Hearn's popular Tales of the Otori trilogy, published in 2004. It describes the events during the months following Takeo and Kaede's marriage at the end of the second book, Grass for His Pillow, leading to Takeo's confrontation with the warlord Arai Daiichi. A period of about 8 months is covered, from Spring to the onset of Winter.

Soon after Kaede and Takeo's marriage, messengers arrive at Terayama from his Uncles with a threat, and the head of Ichiro, his old teacher. The Otori army lies in wait to ambush him, so Takeo leads them over the mountains, and across the river near Kibi, with the assistance of a bridge made by Jo-an and some outcasts. After a minor skirmish with some bandits, they lead the army to Maruyama, the domain that Lady Maruyama left to Kaede. Lady Maruyama's son-in-law, Iida Nariaki, a cousin to Iida Sadamu, has marched in to Maruyama just ahead of them, but Iida's army gets caught between the Maruyama and Takeo's armies, and are defeated.

Meanwhile Shizuka and Kondo Kiichi arrive at the hidden Muto village, and are reunited with her uncle, Kenji, and her two sons. She fears the consequences that will come from Kaede's rash marriage. From Kenji she learns of the Kikuta's belief in the existence of records on the tribe compiled by Shigeru before his death. They decide to send Kondo to Arai, to gauge his reaction to Kaede's marriage, and his feeling towards his sons by Shizuka. Kenji also tells her how his daughter Yuki was recently married to Akio, but was forced to take her life after her son by Takeo was born. The child will remain with the Kikuta, who have their own plans concerning the boy and Takeo's futures.

In Maruyama, they start restoring the land and estates. Takeo is threatened by the local Tribe members, so using Shigeru's records, he has them rounded up and the adults executed. His mind turns to Hagi, and he concocts a plan to invade it by sea. He travels to Oshima island to meet his childhood friend Terada Fumio, whose family have now become pirates, to seek an alliance. Kaede wants to accompany him, but he tells her to stay. On the way he meets Ryoma, an illegitimate son of his Uncle, Masahiro. He makes an agreement with Fumio's father, but his return is delayed by typhoons, and he almost drowns in a storm.

Despite Sugita's objections, Kaede rides to Shirakawa with Hiroshi, and finds that Shoji, the Shirakawa retainer, had given up her sisters to Fujiwara, and returned her hostage to his family. Shocked, she hides the records on the Tribe at the nearby Shrine, and rides to demand her sisters return. Fujiwara abducts her, and only Hiroshi escapes to later bring the news to Maruyama. Fujiwara declares her marriage to Takeo to be illegal, and he forces her to marry him. Their marriage is celibate: he is not interested in her as a woman, but as a treasure, to be locked away.

Takeo returns and hears the news of Kaede's abduction. His army marches towards Shirakawa, but discovers not only Fujiwara's army, but Arai's. They retreat to the coast as Maruyama surrenders to Arai's men, hoping for Fumio to come by boat, but the weather delays him. Takeo submits to Arai, but rather than killing him, they enter into an alliance against the Otori lords (Shigeru's uncles), but to dispel rumors about him being one of the hidden, Takeo is forced to kill the outcast Jo-an. Kenji, turned against the Kikuta because of the murder of his daughter, comes to Takeo and brings a truce, and an alliance on behalf of the Tribe, save the Kikuta. Before they leave, Fumio demonstrates to Takeo the use of a firearm, an invention obtained from the white barbarians.

Arai's army marches north, and Takeo sails around the coast to Hagi. With Kenji and Taku, Arai and Shizuka's younger son, they sneak into the castle, and kill the lords and their families. When Arai's army arrives, he betrays Takeo. Fumio shoots Arai dead with the firearm, and at that moment a huge earthquake rocks the entire three countries. It destroys Arai's army, and in Shirakawa it destroys Fujiwara and his household in an example of Deus ex machina.

The Kikuta master, Kotaro, sneaks into Takeo's house to assassinate him, as he did to his father years before. With Kenji and Taku's help, they defeat him, but Takeo loses 2 fingers, and goes into a delirium from the poisoned blade that cut him. After he recovers, and despite the onset of winter, he rushes south to find what happened to Kaede. They come to the shrine to find Kaede, Shizuka, and her new husband Dr Ishida alive, with the tribal records safe. But Kaede's hair is shorn, terrible burns marring her neck. As it starts to snow, Takeo prays the spring would bring healing to his land.

GRASS FOR HIS PILLOW by Lian Hearn is the second book in a trilogy of novels called TALES OF THE OTORI. Takeo (Tomasu) is our hero and is torn between living with his father's people and his need to take revenge for what was done to his adoptive father, Lord Shigeru of the Otori. Based on life in Feudal Japan, GRASS FOR HIS PILLOW mixes fantasy with some fact, making it feel like a cross between THE LORD OF THE RINGS and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. It is a world of ancient Japan, combined with a fantasy world of flying warriors and magical people.

The first book introduced the reader to the world of the clans, in particular The Otori, in which Tomasu (renamed Takeo by his 'captors') finds himself bonded to for life. Lord Shigeru takes Takeo under his wing and treats him like a son, and many presume that Takeo will eventually inherit Shigeru's standing as the leader of the clan. Through Shigeru and various teachers, Takeo learns a new way of life, a life that is very different from what he knew as a child with his people "The Hidden," peaceful individuals who believe in a new type of god foreign to the rest of Japan. In opposition to what he was taught as a child, Takeo learns how to use a sword like the best of the samurai warriors but also discovers skills he didn't know he had, those of which belong to The Tribe.

By the end of the first book, Takeo has become an expert warrior and has developed new skills inherited by his father who was one of The Tribe, a group of people who have powers and skills that The Hidden believe are evil. Yet this is part of Takeo's heritage, and he learns to use his skills with the mastery that is the envy of the people who capture Takeo at the end of ACROSS THE NIGHTINGALE FLOOR.

GRASS FOR HIS PILLOW picks up exactly where the first book ends. Lady Kaede, who was barely a young woman in the first book, is now madly in love with Takeo but does not know if he is alive or dead. With the help of her lady-in-waiting Shizuka, Kaede slowly amasses the power and strength to become a leader of her own family, the Shirakawa, currently led by her aging father. Her story is one of courage, as she realizes that the only way for she and her sisters to survive is for Kaede to learn the skills that all boys learn from their fathers. She masters the man's language and learns to write and think like a man. She confronts soldiers and lords when needed, showing them no fear. Their father is too old and weak, and Kaede does not want to think that they can't survive without a man. In her opinion, she cannot depend on a man.

In the meantime, Takeo is living amongst The Tribe. He is torn between his identities with the Otori, the people he originally called family (The Hidden), and his father's people, The Tribe. Takeo is confused as to which path to take. He is unhappy but has vowed to be a part of The Tribe, so he attempts to become one of them. Life is not easy for him and the conflict that he feels in his heart does not make it any easier. Although Takeo takes up with another woman on his journeys with The Tribe, his love for Kaede never dies. Not knowing whether she is alive or dead, he continues on his journey with the Tribe. Soon, however, Takeo is on the run attempting to return to the Otori and at the same time watching his back, knowing that The Tribe will not let him live outside their world. Takeo has a destiny to fulfill, but it is unknown if he will succeed.

Although I didn't find this second novel to be as intriguing as the first, I believe that the third novel will bring this epic to a stunning close. THE TALES OF THE OTORI can be enjoyed by adults and young people alike. Not many books use Feudal Japan as a backdrop, and I highly enjoyed it.

Across the Nightingale Floor is the first of Lian Hearn's popular Tales of the Otori trilogy, first published in 2002. The main events cover a period of just over a year, from Tomasu's rescue by Shigeru, his adoption as Otori Takeo, their travel to Inuyama, their betrayal, and Takeo's submission to the Tribe's claim on him.

Tomasu, a 16 year old boy lives amongst the Hidden, a persecuted religious sect. The villagers are slaughtered by the warlord Iida Sadamu and his troops, but Tomasu is rescued by Lord Otori Shigeru of the Otori Clan, renamed Takeo, and brought to Hagi, the Otori stronghold. There they discover Takeo's father was a member of the secretive Kikuta Tribe, and he has many special abilities such as exceptional hearing, invisibility, and the ability to split a second, phantom self from his own.It is 10 years since the battle of Yaegahara, in which the Otori were defeated by Iida Sadamu. Takeo is instructed by Ichiro, and Muto Kenji, a member of the tribe and an old friend of Shigeru's. Kenji arrives after Takeo foils an assassination attempt on Shigeru by the Tribe. The unexpected failure of the attempt raises suspicions within the Tribe of Takeo's abilities. Shigeru hears that Iida sleeps in a room with a nightingale floor, the floorboards which 'sing' whenever someone tries to sneak across it. Shigeru has one built of his own, and Takeo practices with his exceptional skills until he can move silently across it. The unspoken plan is for him to assassinate Iida.Shigeru, who is grieving the recent death of his mother and murder of his brother, plans to adopt Takeo. He seeks permission from Shigeru's uncles, who head the Otori clan. It was they who had ordered the assassination attempt, and to rid themselves of him, make it a condition that he goes to Iida's castle in Inuyama, to marry Shirakawa Kaede.They know it is a trap; nevertheless, they make the journey with Kenji. At Tsuwano they meet Kaede, under the protection of her kinswoman Lady Maruyama (with whom Shigeru has had a secret relationship for almost 10 years), and accompanied by Kenji's niece, Shizuka. But it is Takeo and Kaede who immediately find a connection between them. They stop off at the shrine at Terayama, at the time of the Festival of the Dead, to visit Shigeru's brother's grave, and for Shigeru to discuss war plans with the Abbott.As an army headed by Lord Arai musters from the west, they arrive at Inuyama in the 9th month. Shigeru plans for Takeo to assassinate Iida that night. But the Tribe, not wanting to risk Takeo (and appreciating the stability that Iida brings), abducts him so that his training can be finished.Thus the treachery plays itself out: Shigeru is crucified on the castle wall, and Lady Maruyama and her daughter drown whilst attempting to escape. Takeo makes a deal with the The Tribe that allows him to bring Shigeru's body down in return for joining them. Takeo, together with Kenji and Yuki sneak into the castle at night and bring Shigeru down from the wall. Shigeru, dying from his wounds, asks Takeo to bury him at Terayama. During the invasion of the castle at Inuyama, Takeo discovers Kaede with the corpse of Iida Sadamu, whom she killed when he attempted to rape her.After carrying out Shigeru's wishes, Takeo honors his promise to the Tribe and departs with them, leaving Kaede unconscious and in the care of Muto Shizuka.

Ptolemy's Gate

Ptolemy's Gate is the third book in the Bartimaeus Trilogy, written by Jonathan Stroud.

The British Empire of Ptolemy's Gate is falling apart. Many commoners are unhappy with the current government, though none of the commoners claim responsibility for the status quo. The magician's demons are being assaulted by the children's natural abilities to see and resist the demons. (All of the magicians in the government were originally commoners whose parents sold them to the government at a young age, so it is not hard to understand why they are such a heartless group of people, concerned only with power and wealth.) Some commoners advocate slow reform, while others advocate open revolt, while still others say the commoners should learn how to summon spirits of their own to combat those spirits belonging to the magicians. Ptolemy's Gate concludes with a council of surviving magicians and important commoners trying to work out a government that is beneficial to everyone.

Kitty Jones eventually unearths the reason why humans and spirits are locked into the endless cycle mentioned above: humans do not understand the nature of djinni and summon them only as powerful, but dangerous, slaves, not equals. This theory is confirmed by Bartimaeus who states that his greatest master, Ptolemy, was the only human who treated his servants as equals and tried to build a bridge between djinni and humans. However, Ptolemy misguidedly believed many others would follow in his footsteps; the only other person to ever successfully cross into the Other Place was Kitty.

The Golem's Eye

The Golem's Eye is the second book in the Bartimaeus Trilogy written by Jonathan Stroud.

The book begins two years after the events of The Amulet of Samarkand with Nathaniel, apprenticed to the Minister of Security,(Jessica Whitwell) and working as an understudy to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Julius Tallow. At the exceedingly young age of fourteen he is now a government official and a competent magician, but he no longer uses his original servant, Bartimaeus. When the book starts, he is working on a case involving a shadowy group of rebelling commoners, known as the Resistance. Nathaniel knows only a few facts about the group including three of their members' names: Kitty, Fred, and Stanley. He tries to search for these three but to no avail. He disguises several minor spirits as commoners and sends them out to find the Resistance, but they too find no trace of the elusive group.

Kitty Jones is on a mission for the Resistance during a performance of The Swans of Araby, in a posh London theatre. Kitty is having doubts about the point of her working for the Resistance and she begins to remember her past, and why she joined the Resistance. She remembers back to her childhood, where she lived, somewhat poorly, next door to a Czech family who owned a factory that printed books for the magicians. Nathaniel becomes an apprentice magician after his parents forfeit him (as a very young child) to the magicians' adoption service in return for some money. His master, Arthur Underwood, is a mediocre magician and the assistant minister of Internal Affairs. Underwood is unwilling to having an apprentice whilst his wife, Martha, warmly welcomes Nathaniel.

Throughout his youth, noteworthy events embitter Nathaniel towards Underwood. One year before the events of the novel Underwood hosts a gathering of magicians in his villa. Upon his presentation to the other magicians, Nathaniel (age 10 at the time) is interviewed by his later antagonist Simon Lovelace who dismisses Nathaniel's obvious powers for magic. Nathaniel retorts impolitely and incurs the wrath of an invisible demon which derides his helpless condition. Once he is released, Nathaniel sets a fleet of mites upon Lovelace, which he easily destroys, and is punished with a beating from one of Lovelace's imps. Ms. Lutyens, his admired art teacher, attempts to waylay the punishment and gets fired.

The Name of the Rose, a novel by Umberto Eco, is a historical whodunnit — a murder mystery set in an Italian monastery in the year 1327.

Along with his apprentice Adso of Melk (named after the Benedictine abbey Stift Melk), the Franciscan friar William of Baskerville journeys to an abbey where a murder has been committed.

As the plot unfolds, several other people mysteriously die. The protagonists explore a labyrinthine medieval library, the subversive power of laughter, and come face to face with the Inquisition. It is left primarily to William's enormous powers of logic and deduction to solve the mysteries of the abbey.

On one level, the book is an exposition of the scholastic method which was very popular in the 14th century. William demonstrates the power of deductive reasoning, especially syllogisms. He refuses to accept the diagnosis of simple demonic possession despite demonology being the traditional monastic explanation. Despite the abbey being under the misapprehension that they are experiencing the last days before the coming of Antichrist (a topic closely examined in the book), William, through his empirical mindset, manages to show that the murders are, in fact, committed by a more corporeal instrument. By keeping an open mind, collecting facts and observations, following pure intuition, and the dialectic method, he makes decisions as to what he should investigate, exactly as a scholastic would do. However, the simple use of reason does not suffice. The various signs and happenings only have meaning in their given contexts, and William must constantly be wary of which context he interprets the mystery. Indeed, the entire story challenges the narrator, William's young apprentice Adso, and the reader to continually recognize the context he is using to interpret, bringing the whole text to various levels which can all have different hermeneutical meanings. The narrative ties in many varied plot lines, all of which consider various interpretations and sources of meanings. Many of the interpretations and sources were highly volatile controversies in the medieval religious setting, all while spiraling towards what seems to be the key to understanding and truly interpreting the case. Although William's final theorems do not exactly match the actual events as written, those theorems do allow him to solve the abbey's mystery.

Di sisi lain, ada Kugy, cewek unik cenderung eksentrik, yang juga akan berkuliah di universitas yang sama dengan Keenan. Sejak kecil, Kugy menggila-gilai dongeng. Tak hanya koleksi dan punya taman bacaan, ia juga senang menulis dongeng. Cita-citanya hanya satu: ingin menjadi juru dongeng. Namun Kugy sadar bahwa penulis dongeng bukanlah profesi yang meyakinkan dan mudah diterima lingkungan. Tak ingin lepas dari dunia menulis, Kugy lantas meneruskan studinya di Fakultas Sastra.

Kugy dan Keenan dipertemukan lewat pasangan Eko dan Noni. Eko adalah sepupu Keenan, sementara Noni adalah sahabat Kugy sejak kecil. Terkecuali Noni, mereka semua hijrah dari Jakarta, lalu berkuliah di universitas yang sama di Bandung.Mereka berempat akhirnya bersahabat karib.

Dengan hati hancur, Keenan meninggalkan kehidupannya di Bandung, dan juga keluarganya di Jakarta. Ia lalu pergi ke Ubud, tinggal di rumah sahabat ibunya, Pak Wayan.

Masa-masa bersama keluarga Pak Wayan, yang semuanya merupakan seniman-seniman sohor di Bali, mulai mengobati luka hati Keenan pelan-pelan. Sosok yang paling berpengaruh dalam penyembuhannya adalah Luhde Laksmi, keponakan Pak Wayan. Keenan mulai bisa melukis lagi. Berbekalkan kisah-kisah Jenderal Pilik dan Pasukan Alit yang diberikan Kugy padanya, Keenan menciptakan lukisan serial yang menjadi terkenal dan diburu para kolektor.

Kugy, yang juga sangat kehilangan sahabat-sahabatnya dan mulai kesepian di Bandung, menata ulang hidupnya. Ia lulus kuliah secepat mungkin dan langsung bekerja di sebuah biro iklan di Jakarta sebagai copywriter. Di sana, ia bertemu dengan Remigius, atasannya sekaligus sahabat abangnya. Kugy meniti karier dengan cara tak terduga-duga. Pemikirannya yang ajaib dan serba spontan membuat ia melejit menjadi orang yang diperhitungkan di kantor itu.

Namun Remi melihat sesuatu yang lain. Ia menyukai Kugy bukan hanya karena ide-idenya, tapi juga semangat dan kualitas unik yang senantiasa terpancar dari Kugy. Dan akhirnya Remi harus mengakui bahwa ia mulai jatuh hati. Sebaliknya, ketulusan Remi juga akhirnya meluluhkan hati Kugy.

Edward grants Bella's wish and has sexual intercourse with her. Days later, Bella realizes that she is pregnant and that her condition is progressing at an unnaturally accelerated rate. After contacting Carlisle, who confirms her pregnancy, she and Edward immediately return home to Forks, Washington. Edward, concerned for Bella's well-being and convinced that the fetus is a monster as it continues to develop with unnatural rapidity, urges her to have an abortion. However, Bella wants to keep the child and so contacts Rosalie for support, knowing that Rosalie has always wanted children.

The second part of the novel is written from Jacob's point-of-view, and lasts throughout Bella's pregnancy and childbirth. The Quileute werewolf pack, not knowing what danger the unborn child may pose, make plans to destroy it, even though they must kill Bella to do so. Jacob vehemently protests this decision and leaves, forming his own pack with Leah and Seth Clearwater. Bella soon gives birth, but the baby breaks many of her bones and she loses massive amounts of blood. In order to save her life, Edward changes her into a vampire. Jacob, who was present for the birth, almost immediately "imprints" — an involuntary response in which a werewolf finds his soul mate — on Edward and Bella's newborn daughter, Renesmee.

Victor Frankenstein begins by telling Walton of his childhood. Frankenstein was raised by a wealthy family, and was always encouraged to seek a greater understanding of the world around him (but not science), whilst remaining in a safe environment surrounded by loving family and friends.

Frankenstein grew up with close ties to Elizabeth Lavenza, his orphaned cousin brought to his family who is raised with Frankenstein like a sister, and his friend Henry Clerval. He also becomes interested in galvanism, a technique discovered in the 1790s.

Buku ini memiliki nilai positif yang patut kita pegang, yaitu berpikir positif. Kalaupun tidak berpikir menang, setidaknya Anda berpikir bisa menang juga bisa kalah. Hal itu lebih baik daripada Anda langsung memvonis diri Anda pasti akan kalah.

Diluar semua itu, buku ini membuktikan bahwa pikiran kita benar-benar luar biasa. Kembali ke pertanyaan awal saya. Benda apa atau apa yang paling besar di dunia? Apa jawaban Anda? Jika saya ditanya dengan pertanyaan seperti itu, maka saya akan menjawab : pikiran. Pikiran kita bisa menampung apa saja. Kita bisa membayangkan apa saja, bahkan hal yang tidak nyata sedikitpun. Luas pikiran kita adalah tak terhingga. Adakah suatu benda di dunia ini yang tak dapat kita pikirkan? Bahkan hal yang tak ada di dunia pun bisa kita pikirkan. NASA discovers a very dense meteorite. In it are fossils of bugs very similar to--but not the same as--species on earth. NASA claims this as proof of extraterrestrial life. This find is something NASA needs desperately, as the agency’s success rate on other fronts has put it in a bad light. Senator Sexton uses this as an example of government overspending and failure to further his campaign. Meanwhile, a Delta Force team is observing the discovery, monitoring the NASA staff for an unknown commander. When one of the four civilian scientists observes an irregularity with the pit the meteorite was found in, the Delta Force team 'takes him out' using their miniature spy bot, leaving his body in the pit far below the water where he will not be discovered. A group of four civilian scientists have already been studying the find and have confirmed NASA's claims. It is only hours before the President and NASA plan to go public with the discovery.

The Host is a science fiction/romance novel by Stephenie Meyer. The novel introduces an alien race, called souls, who take over Earth and its inhabitants because they believe humans to be too violent.

Melanie Stryder is one of few "wild" humans - rebels who have evaded the alien souls that have taken over the Earth. With her younger brother Jamie and the man she loves, Jared Howe, Mel is on the run from souls who hunt down host bodies for use. Souls are creatures that rely upon host bodies to survive. After insertion, they erase any mental presence of the being there prior and establish a claim over the body and mind. Earth is Wanderer's ninth planet, and Mel is her ninth host body. Upon waking inside her new body, she is shocked not only by the vividness of human emotions, memories, and senses, but quickly learns that Melanie Stryder is not willing to give up the entirety of her mind.

Wanderer is bombarded with memories and her host body's yearning for Jared and Jamie, and finds herself in love with the humans and desperate to see if they are still alive. On a road trip to Tucson, Melanie remembers her Uncle Jeb telling her about a secret hideaway he once made. Wanderer sets out to find the hideaway, with a vague sketch of the path from Melanie's memories, and is found by Jeb on the verge of death, incredibly exhausted and dehydrated. She is taken back to the caves in which some "wild" humans live, but is treated spitefully as they believe Wanderer to be a "parasite" in Melanie's body. Kyle O'Shea and many others attempt to kill Wanderer, but are stopped by Jeb. Given time, Wanderer, now becoming known as 'Wanda' (Jeb's doing), becomes a part of the routine by working, eating, and becoming an unofficial history teacher after evening meals; some even grow to believe that Melanie is present in her mind as well. During this time Ian and many other humans, such as Wes, Lily, Walter, and Mel's younger brother Jamie, befriend Wanda. Kyle tries to kill Wanda by throwing her into a river. He is unsuccessful and is about to fall into the river himself when Wanda saves him. A tribunal is held and it is decided that Kyle is allowed to stay, though many of Wanda's friends are upset about this decision, particularly Ian, who believes that Kyle deserves to die after his plot to kill Wanda. Meanwhile, Ian begins to fall in love with Wanda. After discovering this, she is confused with her own feelings because of the fact that Mel's memories caused her to love Jared, too.

Kisah ini dimulai dengan Keenan, seorang remaja pria yang baru lulus SMA, yang selama enam tahun tinggal di Amsterdam bersama neneknya. Di sisi lain, ada Kugy, cewek unik cenderung eksentrik, yang juga akan berkuliah di universitas yang sama dengan Keenan. Sejak kecil, Kugy menggila-gilai dongeng. Tak hanya koleksi dan punya taman bacaan, ia juga senang menulis dongeng. Cita-citanya hanya satu: ingin menjadi juru dongeng. Namun Kugy sadar bahwa penulis dongeng bukanlah profesi yang meyakinkan dan mudah diterima lingkungan. Tak ingin lepas dari dunia menulis, Kugy lantas meneruskan studinya di Fakultas Sastra.

Kugy dan Keenan dipertemukan lewat pasangan Eko dan Noni. Eko adalah sepupu Keenan, sementara Noni adalah sahabat Kugy sejak kecil. Terkecuali Noni, mereka semua hijrah dari Jakarta, lalu berkuliah di universitas yang sama di Bandung.Mereka berempat akhirnya bersahabat karib.

Lambat laun, Kugy dan Keenan, yang memang sudah saling mengagumi, mulai mengalami transformasi. Diam-diam, tanpa pernah berkesempatan untuk mengungkapkan, mereka saling jatuh cinta. Namun kondisi saat itu serba tidak memungkinkan. Kugy sudah punya kekasih, cowok mentereng bernama Joshua, alias Ojos (panggilan yang dengan semena-mena diciptakan oleh Kugy). Sementara Keenan saat itu dicomblangkan oleh Noni dan Eko dengan seorang kurator muda bernama Wanda.

Persahabatan empat sekawan itu mulai merenggang. Kugy lantas menenggelamkan dirinya dalam kesibukan baru, yakni menjadi guru relawan di sekolah darurat bernama Sakola Alit. Di sanalah ia bertemu dengan Pilik, muridnya yang paling nakal. Pilik dan kawan-kawan berhasil ia taklukkan dengan cara menuliskan dongeng tentang kisah petualangan mereka sendiri, yang diberinya judul: Jenderal Pilik dan Pasukan Alit. Kugy menulis kisah tentang murid-muridnya itu hampir setiap hari dalam sebuah buku tulis, yang kelak ia berikan pada Keenan.

The 8th Habit: From effectiveness to greatness English

The essence of this habit is that you will find your voice when you can say you are 100% involved with what you are doing in your life, so that your body, mind, heart and spirit are all engaged in whatever is important to you. To find your voice, you need to examine your natural talent, what you absolutely love to do, what really interests you. And you must listen to the confirming inner voice of your conscience that tells you what is the right thing to do.

We can discover our voice because of the 3 gifts we are born with:

Gift 1: The freedom to choose

Gift 2: The natural laws or principles – those that dictate the consequences of behaviour. Positive consequences come from fairness, kindness, respect, honesty, integrity, service and contribution

Gift 3: The four intelligences – mental, physical, emotional and spiritual.

Covey talks about great achievers expressing their voice through the use of their intelligences; for example:

Great achievers develop their mental energy into vision
Great achievers develop their physical energy into discipline
Great achievers develop their emotional energy into passion
Great achievers develop their spiritual energy into conscience – their inward moral sense of what is right and wrong and their drive towards meaning and contribution.

Moral authority makes formal authority work towards positive ends. Hitler had vision, discipline and passion, but was driven by a mad ego. Lack of conscience and understanding of “Gift 2” was his downfall. We must control our ego and let our conscience guide our moment to moment behaviour. As we develop the 4 intelligences, we will find our voice.

Covey says that the reality in business today is that there are many people who have not found their voices or have lost their voices. We see this every day – people go to work to serve their “bodily” needs, but do not really put their creativity, talent and intelligence into the job. Very true – and losing your voice is a good metaphor for understanding – the question of course is; how do we get our voice back?

Inspiring others to find their voice

When you have found your voice, you can begin inspiring others to do the same – this is really about leadership. Great leaders have always inspired people to be self aware, to find themselves and to find their voice – that is the essence of greatness. People and organisations who have truly found their voices go on to become great.

Leadership greatness is about 4 things; modelling the 7 habits, pathfinding, aligning and empowering. Pathfinding is about “one voice”, shared vision, values, uniting diverse people into one shared voice, creating order without demanding it. The voice of execution requires you to practice alignment so that the values and strategy are consistently executed without relying on the leader’s continuing presence. Covey goes on to reiterate a point previously made by John Kotter, that most organisations are over managed and under led, and the empowering role of leadership means creating agreements about goals that align with the company’s vision and then holding people accountable for results. He states that true empowerment is the natural result of both personal and organisational trustworthiness, which enables people to identify and then unleash their potential.

Organisational greatness comes from a vision, mission and values that bring clarity, commitment, translation, synergy, enabling and accountability. Covey says that an organisation with great leaders (who live the 4 leadership roles of modelling, pathfinding, alignment and empowering) and great people (who have discovered their gifts and their voice) has hit the “sweet spot” – where the greatest expression of power and potential happens. He leaves us with 4 essential disciplines which, if practiced consistently, can vastly improve our ability to focus on and execute our top priorities:

Focus on what is important – focus only on a few crucial goals
Create a compelling scoreboard – people play differently when they are keeping score
Translate goals into specific actions – weekly and daily tasks
Hold each other accountable, all the time.

The 8th Habit contains summaries of the material from his other books, however, somehow is more difficult to read. It reads more as an encyclopaedia of Covey’s work, rather than the intuitive flow of the attributes that make a person great. If you have not already read the 7 Habits, I would strongly recommend you to read it before tackling this book. It is better written, easier to follow and each of the habits are described in a way which makes them easier to understand in the context of each of the other habits.

The book does contain some good ideas and some new language to think about self development and leadership, but for me was less of a cathartic experience than The 7 Habits.

In summary, The 8th Habit is an interesting read, but it does not measure up to the quality of Covey’s original work.
